Chitraketu: The Echoes of Our Choices
King Chitraketu: Prisoner of his own desires

We pick up right where we left off with Chitraketu, the righteous king, whose life is going to be completely transformed. In the previous blogs, "Exploring the Past Life of Vritrasur" and "Clash of Egos," we uncovered the tale of Vritrasur, born from sacred fire to avenge Vishwaroop's death and killed by King Indra in an epic battle. But the story doesn’t just end there; it takes a mesmerising turn as Vritrasur’s soul merges with the divine essence of Lord Vishnu, raising a question: how can a demon achieve God-realization?

Shukdev Paramhans revealed that Vritrasur was, in fact, King Chitraketu in his past life. This noble king had everything—wealth, power, and respect—but was consumed by sorrow because there was no heir to his throne. Sage Angira stepped onto the scene, bearing a precious offering that held the promise of fulfilling Chitraketu's deep desire for a child.

King Chitraketu's Joy

Finally the heir is born!

In due course, a son was born to Chitraketu and his wife Kritadyuti. Chitraketu’s joy was indescribable; it was as if the sun itself had burst forth to illuminate his heart. In a grand display of wealth and generosity, he showered his subjects with an astonishing bounty—mountains of gold, shimmering silver, exquisite ornaments, and herds of magnificent cows. Day by day, Chitraketu's love for his son deepened, and he couldn't help but imagine the greatness that lay ahead for the little prince.

King Chitraketu's Sorrow

In the meantime, the atmosphere in Chitraketu's palace turned ominous as jealousy brewed among the other queens. Consumed by resentment, they couldn’t bear the thought of being overshadowed by the newborn son and the attention that was being given to Queen Kritadyuti. Queen Kritadyuti had captured the king’s heart entirely, and he spent most of his time with them. Plots and whispers filled the air, and dark intentions took root as other Queens devised a wicked scheme to eliminate the source of their envy.

The evil plan

In a chilly night filled with shadows, they carried out their sinister plan, slyly poisoning the innocent child they had come to despise. As dawn broke, an unbearable silence enveloped the palace. Kritadyuti and Chitraketu were shattered, their world collapsing around them with the devastating news of their son’s untimely death.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting an eerie glow over the royal palace, King Chitraketu was engulfed in an ocean of sorrow, mourning the untimely death of his beloved son. He stood alone, lost in a tempest of anguish, when suddenly, Sages Narad and Angira appeared before him.

Divine Intervention

Startled and still consumed by grief, Chitraketu squinted at the two radiant figures, his heart pounding. “Who are you?” he demanded, his voice thick with pain.

Angira stepped forward, his presence commanding yet serene. “Remember me, O King? I am the sage who blessed you with a son when your heart ached for one. On my first visit, I held the key to the highest wisdom — the profound understanding of life itself. But your heart was set on earthly desires, and so I granted your wish.”

The broken father

He paused, allowing the weight of his words to settle in. “Now, Chitraketu, you stand before me not just as a father but as a man shattered by the shackles of attachment. You have tasted the bittersweet fruit of your desires — the joy of fatherhood, the love of your wives, the pride of your kingdom, and the allure of wealth. Yet, every attachment you nurtured has caused you nothing but sorrow."

As Chitraketu began to calm down, Sage Narad showed him the soul of his departed son and then gently urged him:

“Look closely, Chitraketu, your bond with this child, though deep and meaningful, is just a fleeting chapter in the grand epic of existence. This child is not just a part of your life; he is a thread woven into the vast fabric of countless births that have come before and will come after.”

Finally, Sage Narad imparted profound teachings on devotion to Chitraketu, igniting a spark within him. Having traversed the tumultuous paths of life, Chitraketu experienced highs and crushing lows, ultimately realising the emptiness of chasing after fleeting material gains. With newfound clarity, he immersed himself in deep meditation and dedicated his life to the practice of devotion under Sage Narad's guidance.

Curse and Transformation

One fateful day, having ascended to the celestial skies on an aerial vehicle gifted by Lord Vishnu, Chitraketu soared above the majestic peaks of Mount Kailash. There he beheld an extraordinary sight: Lord Shiv and Mother Parvati, encircled by a gathering of revered sages.

Driven by curiosity, Chitraketu descended from his aerial vehicle, eager to witness the divine discourse. As he approached the assembly, he blurted out an inappropriate remark aimed at Lord Shiv and Mother Parvati. Lord Shiva laughed off the comments. However, Mother Parvati was not amused. Her expression hardened, and in an instant, she unleashed a curse: "Chitraketu, you would be born as a demon."

HIs heartfelt apology to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati

Chitraketu, having realised the depth of his mistake, offered a sincere apology to Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati and accepted the curse bestowed upon him. As a result, this profound curse transformed him into Vritrasur, a formidable demon. Unlike an ordinary demon, Vritrasur drew from the spiritual practices of his past life, enabling him to maintain a deep state of meditation even in the chaos of battle. Standing resolute, he remained unwavering in his connection to the divine as he faced the mighty Indra in a cataclysmic clash.

Summary

This story of King Chitraketu reveals his future birth as demon Vritrasur. Initially grief-stricken over his childlessness, Chitraketu eventually had a son, only to experience deeper sorrow at the child's poisoning by jealous queens. Sages Angira and Narad intervened, offering wisdom that led Chitraketu to spiritual devotion. However, an impulsive insult directed at Lord Shiva and Parvati resulted in a curse, leading to his birth as the powerful, yet spiritually aware, demon Vritrasur, who was defeated by Indra and ultimately attained the abode of Lord Narayan.
